Quilting for Retail Bedding – More Than Just a Pretty Pattern
Published 20th May 2024
It’s easy to think that the quilting on the top of retail bedding is just a pretty pattern to make the mattress look good and perhaps sell for a little bit more. However, there is much more to mattress quilting than just aesthetics. Here at Redwood, we understand the many advantages of quilted mattresses for our clients and their customers.
First impressions
Of course, quilting does play a part in making your mattress look more attractive in the retail bedding store. The more intricate and detailed the pattern, the more the mattress is perceived as being a quality product that has been made with care – making the customer more inclined to pay a premium price.
Many manufacturers will use unique or signature quilting patterns to differentiate their retail bedding from that of their competitors. This helps them to create an individual, branded look, even when the underlying mattress product is essentially the same.
But as anyone who has ever bought a new mattress will tell you, looks are only the start of the decision-making process. After all, your mattress will be covered by a sheet the vast majority of the time, so how it looks in your bedroom is really not that important.
Enhanced quality
A much more relevant part of mattress quilting is the ways in which it improves the mattress. Quilting allows retail bedding manufacturers to incorporate a number of different materials within the layers of the mattress cover, such as cotton, wool or other fibres, foam or memory foam or even specialist gels.
These materials give the mattress added qualities, compared to an unquilted mattress, such as:
- Improved comfort – quilting adds a softer, plush layer to the top of the mattress. This makes it more comfortable to sleep on and protects the surface from springs and other components below.
- More even weight distribution – a cushioned or padded quilted surface spreads your weight and reduces problems with pressure points and even bed sores.
- Increased durability – quilted mattress covers will hold their shape for much longer. The quilting prevents the fabric from bunching, stretching or sagging and keeps the comfortable substrate layers in place, even after years of use.
- More regulated temperature – when cotton or wool is used in the substrate layers of a quilted mattress, they can help to keep you cool as you sleep. Specialist gels and latex layers can increase this comfort level for particularly warm sleepers.
